About AFTEX
The ASEAN Federation of Textile Industries (AFTEX) is a grouping of textile and garment associations of the 10 ASEAN member countries.
AFTEX’ structure is modeled after the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It consists of a number of standing committees and a main council. Each standing committee is headed by a member country. The main council consists of the following from each member country:- 1 Chief Delegate; 3 Nominated Members; 3 Alternate Members
AFTEX OBJECTIVES
Since 1977, AFTEX members have met regularly to discuss policies and implement ASEAN-wide projects, with the objectives of:-
- Advocating a common position on international trade policies.
- Promoting intra-ASEAN trade.
- Promoting ASEAN textile and garment to the global marketplace.
AFTEX MEMBERS
AFTEX was formed in 1977 as a grouping of all the textile and garment associations of the six ASEAN nations at the time: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, and Thailand. Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar later joined AFTEX after their respective countries joined ASEAN.

Some of the more important current AFTEX projects are as follows:-
Source ASEAN Full Service Alliance (SAFSA)
The Source ASEAN Full Service Alliance (SAFSA) program is an ASEAN industry integration concept to form Virtual Vertical Factories (VVFs) linking textile and garment factories in ASEAN with international customers to provide a full suite of competitive services.
The SAFSA concept was developed by USAID’s ACE Project in consultation with AFTEX with the purpose of:-
- Serving customers’ full service requirements.
- Reducing lead times and improving product quality and capacity for innovation.
- Strengthening and upgrading ASEAN’s textile and apparel supply chains.
Workforce Development /ASEAN Common Competencies Program (ACCP)
The AFTEX Skills Taskforce has been tasked with enhancing and upgrading garment industry workforce skills in ASEAN member countries. With the assistance of USAID’s ACE Project, the Taskforce has developed the ASEAN Common Competencies Program (ACCP).
In May 2009, designated AFTEX member countries agreed to develop, test, and certify common competencies for five pilot job positions:- Sewing machine operator; Sewing machine supervisor; Sewing machine mechanic; Pattern maker; and Merchandiser.
