Textiles and apparel are among the 13 US manufacturing industries expecting
improved revenues in 2010.

Economic growth in the US will resume in 2010, said US purchasing and supply
management executives in their December 2009 Semiannual Economic Forecast.

The manufacturing sector positive about prospects in 2010 with revenues
expected to increase in 13 of 18 industries, while the non-manufacturing sector
appears slightly less positive about the year ahead with eight of 18 industries

APEC free trade a key issue under Japan’s leadership

The government said Wednesday it will accelerate efforts to get Pacific Rim economies to create a free-trade area during a series of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meetings next year, stressing the importance of sharing views among its 21 members.

Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada’s pledge at a two-day APEC symposium in Tokyo, which effectively marked the start of Japan’s chairmanship in 2010, comes amid signs of difficulty reaching a consensus in the diversified regional body, with some members wary of the United States securing its presence in Asia.

Vinatex to generate jobs for ethnic minority people

The Vietnam Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex) will begin construction of a garment factory in Bac Giang province’s Son Dong district, on November 28, where around 47 percent of the population belongs to ethnic minority.

The factory will be set up at a cost of VND 42 billion and would generate VND 52 billion per year, with an output of 3.5 million units and employment for almost 1,000 local people.

Specialty chemicals possess high value and are manufactured in low volume. These speciality chemicals normally have performance enhancing properties.

During the process of manufacture, textiles go through various chemical treatments. This includes pretreatment, dyeing, and refinement of textiles.

Special chemicals which have properties of flame retardants and water repellents are used in this process. Additives, adhesives, corrosion inhibitors, dyes, lubricants, and pigments are a few to name.

Get Ready For Asean-China Free-Trade Pact

An Asean-China Free-Trade Agreement is coming, whether Indonesian producers “are ready or not,” Industry Minister MS Hidayat told lawmakers on Wednesday.

The FTA will allow thousands of products from China to enter Indonesia with no import duties.

“I have been trying to renegotiate [the deal] with all parties, but I have to admit, it was very difficult to do so, considering we only have one month left” before the FTA comes into force, Hidayat told the House of Representatives Commission VI on trade and industry.

Miti to make decision on Malaysia-US FTA talks soon

Trade Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed hopes to find out in a few weeks if the country should still pursue a free trade area deal with the US, its biggest trading partner, or join a regional pact instead.

The US has indicated its preference to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), an existing deal that consists of Singapore, New Zealand, Brunei and Chile.

US chief negotiator Barbara Weisel met Ministry of International Trade and Industry secretary-general Tan Sri Rahman Mamat in Kuala Lumpur yesterday and conveyed the news.
